Box of Smiles – Mission Statement

The Box of Smiles exists to use creativity as a form of care, connection, and expression.

We believe that everyone — including people living with dementia or neurological change, has the right to creative life, meaningful participation, and joyful connection.

Through writing, spoken word, music, and accessible arts practice, Box of Smiles creates welcoming, dementia-friendly spaces where people can express themselves in the present moment, share stories, and build relationships across generations.

Our mission is to:

  • support emotional and mental wellbeing
  • reduce isolation and stigma
  • validate identity and voice
  • strengthen community through shared creative experience

We place dignity, choice, and humanity at the heart of everything we do. Creativity is not something people lose , it is something that adapts, grows, and continues.

Box of Smiles – Arts & Creative Writing Manifesto

This is how we work. This is what we believe.

1. Creativity Belongs to Everyone

Creativity is not defined by age, diagnosis, or ability. Everyone has a voice, whether spoken, written, sung, or simply felt.

2. We Create in the Present Moment

We focus on what is happening now. Joy, expression, and connection in the present are just as valuable as memory or reminiscence.

3. Process Matters More Than Product

The act of creating is more important than the outcome. There is no “right” way to write, speak, or make.

4. We Value Expression Over Explanation

Words do not have to make sense. Meaning can live in rhythm, sound, gesture, or silence.

5. Safe, Supportive Spaces Come First

Our sessions are calm, welcoming, and non-judgemental. Participation is always a choice. Listening is as valid as speaking.

6. Identity Is Respected and Affirmed

Every person is more than a condition. Creative work validates identity, dignity, and individuality.

7. Creativity Supports Wellbeing

Creative expression can reduce distress, build confidence, improve mood, and offer new ways to communicate.

8. Connection Is Creative

Shared making builds trust, empathy, and community. Smiles grow when people create together.

9. Artists Are Facilitators, Not Instructors

Our facilitators guide, support, and listen. They do not correct, rush, or judge.

10. Intergenerational Creativity Strengthens Communities

When generations create together, understanding grows and stigma fades.

11. We Meet People Where They Are

Sessions adapt to energy, mood, and ability. Flexibility is part of our practice.

12. The Box Holds Many Smiles

Every contribution matters. Poems, fragments, drawings, pauses — all belong in the Box of Smiles.
